SEATTLE – With nearly 350,000 people expected to ride a state ferry Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Dec. 1, those who planned ahead will be thankful they avoided the busiest travel times this Thanksgiving weekend. Over the five-day period, up to 50,000 more people are projected aboard Washington State Ferries than a typical Wednesday through Sunday in November.

SEATTLE – Washington State Ferries is moving forward with converting its three Jumbo Mark II class ferries, the largest in the fleet, from diesel to hybrid electric propulsion. In early October, the trustee administering the nationwide federal Volkswagen settlement approved up to $35 million to support retrofitting the first of the ferries from diesel to electric power.

SEATTLE – Washington State Ferries has initiated use of a whale alert app and web-based system this week that will provide ferry captains more accurate and updated location information for southern resident orcas and other whales throughout Puget Sound. Access to Ocean Wise’s Whale Report Alert System (WRAS) is only granted to the commercial maritime operators such as ferries, ships and tugs. It is not available for public use or for whale watch operators.

CLINTON – Starting Monday afternoon, Sept. 30, Washington State Ferries customers at the Clinton Ferry Terminal will begin using an improved passenger pickup and drop-off area.

SEATTLE – People walking on or off a ferry at the biggest ferry terminal in the state will encounter big changes on Sunday, Sept. 15. That’s when Washington State Ferries will move all ticketing and walk-on operations out of the existing terminal building at Colman Dock and into the first section of the new terminal building to the south. Access will remain unchanged for people headed to the dock in a vehicle, bicycle or motorcycle.
