New westbound exit lane to Montlake will start a mile before current ramps; eastbound traffic unaffected during closure

SEATTLE – Pay heed, floating bridge travelers: beginning late Friday, July 14, crews will close all lanes of westbound State Route 520 for the weekend between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard.

The closure is needed to shift drivers onto a new westbound exit lane and off-ramp that leads to Lake Washington and Montlake boulevards. Once the bridge reopens, some drivers will need to make adjustments to their travel patterns.

“The new lane could take drivers by surprise if they’re not paying close attention as they travel west across the floating bridge, since it starts about a mile before the existing Montlake-area off-ramps,” said Washington State Department of Transportation Project Engineer Steve Strand. “We know it may take a little time to get used to change, so we’re asking everyone to remain patient with other folks on the road.”

What’s closed over the weekend

From 11 p.m. Friday, July 14, until 5 a.m. Monday, July 17, crews will close westbound SR 520 and all associated on- and off-ramps between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard, along with the floating bridge’s bicycle-and-pedestrian path. The on-ramp from Montlake Boulevard to westbound SR 520 will remain open. Eastbound SR 520 is not affected by the closure.

New day, new way

Beginning Monday morning, July 17, drivers planning to exit to Montlake or Lake Washington boulevards will be the first to use the new exit lane and off-ramp. The new lane will peel off from westbound traffic near the west end of the floating bridge.

More information

Under construction since 2014, the West Approach Bridge North project adds three westbound lanes and a bike-and-pedestrian path from the new floating bridge to Montlake Boulevard. In August, contractor crews plan to open the remaining westbound lanes, including an HOV lane, between the floating bridge and Montlake. WSDOT will open the bicycle-and-pedestrian path, the final phase of construction, later this fall.
