Oct. 10 ceremony celebrates opening of new intersection

SPOKANE – Just a few months after work started, the new Wellesley Avenue/Freya Street roundabout in northeast Spokane will wrap up in early October.

Elected officials, area residents and business leaders will gather with Washington State Department of Transportation officials at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 10, to celebrate the new intersection’s completion.. The roadway should open that afternoon.

Halme Construction of Airway Heights was the prime contractor on the $2.1 million roundabout in Spokane’s Hillyard neighborhood, just north of the Esmeralda golf course.

The roundabout replaces stop signs at this busy intersection and widens both streets. The improvements provide more efficient travel through the area, especially for large trucks traveling to and from nearby industrial and distribution businesses. WSDOT is funding and building this project because the future Wellesley Avenue Interchange on the US 395/North Spokane Corridor freeway will bring more traffic to the area.

The city of Spokane partnered with WSDOT on this project, with the city completing water line and utility work in preparation for the roundabout construction
