Where are the express toll lanes?
The I-405 express toll lanes are located between NE 6th Street in Bellevue and I-5 in Lynnwood.

There are two express toll lanes in each direction of I-405 between NE 6th Street in Bellevue and just south of SR 522 in Bothell. There is one express toll lane in each direction of I-405 between SR 522 in Bothell and I-5 in Lynnwood.

How do express toll lanes work?
The express toll lanes are open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. You enter and exit the I-405 express toll lanes at designated access points. Unless you qualify to ride toll- free, you will pay the toll rate you see when you entering the express toll lanes. Learn more about who can use the lanes toll-free and toll rates.

How do I access the express toll lanes?
There are three different types of access points for the express toll lanes:

  • The most common access point is a dashed white line that allows you to merge in and out of the express toll lanes.
  • Temporary weave lanes allow you to signal out of the express toll lanes before merging into the general purpose lane. These lanes separate entering and exiting vehicles from through traffic.
  • There are two direct access ramps that HOVs and toll-paying drivers can use to enter and exit the express toll lanes directly from NE 6th Street in Bellevue and NE 128th Street in Kirkland. After express toll lane hours of operation, direct access ramps are restricted to HOV only.

Remember that failure to use designated access points may result in a $136 ticket for crossing double white lines and is enforced by Washington State Patrol.

What about the I-405 HOV lanes south of NE 6th Street to I-5 in Renton?
The existing HOV lanes south of NE 6th Street in Bellevue to I-5 in Renton, operate the same as they always have: free to carpools with two people or more and open to all drivers between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. each day.

Is WSDOT modifying the access points?
It will take time for drivers become familiar with the express toll lanes and adjust to the access points. We're monitoring access points to identify challenging areas. Temporary striping is in place on the express toll lanes specifically for this purpose – so we can make adjustments.

We have already made adjustments to the striping near NE 160th Street to give drivers more space to merge based on our observations and feedback we've heard from you. If you have feedback to share, email 405carpool@wsdot.wa.gov.
