I-405 Express Toll Lanes - Who Can Use the Lanes

Video - I-405 Express Toll Lanes Basics

Watch a short video to learn the basics of using the express toll lanes.

The I-405 express toll lanes give you the option to pay a toll for a faster, more reliable trip.

Carpools
Carpools are always welcome to use the express toll lanes; however, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday you must have the correct number of occupants in your vehicle and a Flex Pass set to HOV mode to ride toll-free. Learn more about HOV occupancy requirements and see if you qualify for a free Flex Pass. Looking for another person for your carpool? Use the Ridematch tool on RideshareOnline.com.

Non-carpools and single occupancy vehicles
Vehicles that do not have the required number of occupants to travel toll-free, either solo drivers from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, or two person carpools during peak periods, can still use the express toll lanes. To use the lanes, you’ll pay the toll you see on the toll rate sign when entering the lanes plus an additional $2 per toll if you do not have a Good To Go! pass. Learn more about how to pay a toll.

Vanpools and transit
Registered vanpools and transit always drive toll-free in the express toll lanes with a pre-paid account and a Flex Pass. King County Metro, Community Transit and Sound Transit worked with our customer service center to ensure transit and vanpools were ready.

If your vanpool provider is not listed, contact GoodToGoTolling@wsdot.wa.gov to find a solution. Authorized transit buses are allowed to use the bus-only lanes along the shoulder of I-405 as well. Learn more about bus shoulder lanes for authorized buses.

Motorcycles
Motorcycles ride toll-free in the express toll lanes with a motorcycle pass. If you ride a motorcycle on I-405, request a free motorcycle pass while supplies last in 2016. Learn more about how to get a free motorcycle pass.

Fleet vehicles
Fleet vehicles are always welcome to use the express toll lanes. To travel toll-free from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, you must meet the HOV occupancy requirement and have a Flex Pass set to HOV mode. Fleet vehicles do not qualify for a free Flex Pass.

Commercial vehicles
Trucks over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight are not allowed into the express toll lanes at any time, including nights or weekends. This is consistent with HOV lane restrictions throughout Washington. We will monitor traffic patterns in the new lanes and may consider adjusting the rules for some trucks in the future.
