Use of Recycled Concrete Aggregate in PCCP: Literature Search


The use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is recommended based on a review of literature that investigated the properties and characteristics of RCA, the physical properties of fresh and hardened concrete containing RCA, the mechanical behavior of concrete containing RCA, and special considerations for concrete pavements using RCA to achieve suitable levels of workability, durability, and strength. The literature also detailed concrete pavement design considerations as well as the successes and failures of trial projects built by other states.

A recommendation is made that RCA be considered for use in Western Washington and that the FHWA Technical Advisory be used as a guide during implementation.
