This Environmental Retrofit Project addressed Fish Barriers under SR 20.
Why did WSDOT
Replace the existing culvert?
The undercrossing of Little Boulder Creek was identified as deficient for fish passage by the Washington State Department of Wildlife.
The End Result
The 6-foot by 9-foot, steel structural plate arch was replaced with a 26-foot bottomless steel pipe arch allowing fish passage in a more natural environment.

Increasing safety is a priority
Safety for the public and the construction workers is paramount while the work is underway. A comprehensive traffic control plan and a work zone safety plan was in place to protect travelers and workers.
Did this project impact tribal resources?
No impacts to tribal resources were identified. WSDOT addresses the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

This project was advertised for bids on April 18th and eight bids were opened on May 12th. Snelson Companies Inc. was awarded contract #6979 on May 16th for $409,435.00, 11% under the engineering estimate.
