Most of the Chelan Avenue construction will be done at night to reduce traffic disruptions

WENATCHEE – A three-month paving project on State Route 285 Couplet – Chelan Avenue from Miller to Mission streets begins June 15, but crews say at least one lane will remain open and disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

The Washington State Department of Transportation scheduled this 1.75 mile project to repair asphalt that deteriorated from normal traffic use. Several of the sidewalk ramps also don't meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and pavement markings are in need of restoration.

Besides grinding and paving the driving lanes with asphalt, the project also includes crack sealing and an asphalt seal on parking areas not being paved. Also included are sidewalk improvements, updated traffic signal controls for pedestrians, new signs and striping Conduit for future fiber optic cable connecting traffic signals is being installed, as well as other system upgrades.

Grinding and paving will be done at night to affect traffic as little as possible. At least one lane will remain open at all times. There will be no official signed detours as drivers have several easy and well known optional routes. Pedestrians will be detoured around the sidewalk demolition and reconstruction.

Construction is scheduled for 60 working days, with completion in September. “During that time, we’re using all our tools to let the public know how each stage of the work will affect them,” said project engineer Kevin Waligorski. “Our project webpage, 5-1-1, the weekly construction update, the Highway Advisory Radio (AM 1610), Twitter, electronic message signs, even bilingual Spanish-English electronic kiosks placed at City Hall and businesses along the route.”

This $1.1 million project is being constructed by Central Washington Asphalt Inc. of Moses Lake.
