FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sept. 20, 2010

Contractor crews to repair concrete panels on eastbound I-82 starting Sept. 20

GRANGER - The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has directed contractor crews to remove and replace deficient concrete panels on Interstate 82 between Granger and Grandview. The work will be done at the contractor’s expense.

The work is scheduled for Sept. 20 through 22 during daylight hours. WSDOT expects minimal impacts to traffic.

WSDOT inspectors discovered that 27 newly poured concrete panels had voids in the concrete underneath the surface at the joint line. The panels do not meet specifications due to these voids. The panel repairs will be from seven to 15 feet in length.

Since June, WSDOT and contractor crews have been rehabilitating 15 miles of highway as part of the $5.6 million I-82 Eastbound Granger to West Grandview Concrete Rehabilitation Project.

Improvements include:
• Restoring the structural integrity of the roadway
• Extending the life of the pavement
• Providing a smoother roadway
• Improving traction
• Restoring signing, striping and other basic safety features

Penhall Company of Rogers, Minn., is on schedule to complete the remaining contract work by October on time and on budget.

WSDOT estimates this stimulus-funded project will support 55 jobs, which includes jobs on the project, jobs producing materials for the project, and other jobs in the local community.
