Construction begins this spring to smooth the ride on US 2

MONROE – WSDOT announced today that the US 2 Monroe to Sultan paving project, funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), was advertised to contractors. The stimulus project is valued at $4.7 million and will support approximately 40 jobs.

“We are pleased to be starting this project four years ahead of the original schedule,” said Paula Hammond, Washington Transportation Secretary. “The pavement is showing signs of wear and tear and was damaged even more by the harsh winters we’ve had recently. When we’re done, drivers will have a smoother, safer ride between Monroe and Sultan.”

Crews will repave about 10 lane miles of US 2 between the eastern city limit of Monroe and the western city limit of Sultan. They will also repaint pavement striping and replace the centerline and shoulder rumble strips. Crews installed new high-visibility striping and rumble strips last summer as part of a safety improvement project on US 2 between Monroe and Stevens Pass.

WSDOT plans to open bids on May 6 and will award the contract by May 11. Work is scheduled to start by mid-June and will be completed by fall 2009.
