***Updated Monday, March 30***
BURLINGTON – Crews will reopen the rebuilt State Route 11 Chuckanut Drive overpass on schedule in Burlington at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 30.
The overpass has been closed since Jan. 26, 2009, for demolition and reconstruction. It was severely damaged in July 2008 when it was hit by a truck towing an excavator on northbound Interstate 5.
Crews rebuilt the eastern portion of the overpass with stronger, wider concrete girders, increasing the height clearance over northbound I-5 by 6 inches – the clearance is now 15 feet 9 inches.
The street-legal height for vehicles is 14 feet. Anything taller than that requires a permit.
Taxpayers will not have to bear the burden of the cost of this $1 million project. The responsible party’s insurance company will pay for the damage and repairs.
