TACOMA – Pavement work planned this weekend in Pierce County will cause nighttime triple-lane closures on I-5 and single-lane and ramp closures on SR 16.

Crews will close the left-lane of eastbound SR 16 at the Nalley Valley viaduct and the on-ramp from eastbound SR 16 to northbound I-5 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday. This allows crews to repair a section of the viaduct hit by an over-height load.

Motorists wishing to reach northbound I-5 from eastbound SR 16 will be detoured to southbound I-5, onto 38th Street where drivers can enter northbound I-5.

Saturday, Oct. 4, crews will replace damaged concrete panels along northbound I-5 near the SR 512 interchange. This work requires crews to close the three left lanes from 10 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Crews will also replace panels on northbound I-5 in Thurston County this weekend. Motorists can expect a double right-lane and on-ramp closure at Nisqually from 7 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday.

During the closures, crews will cut and remove the broken concrete panels in the roadway and pour new concrete. The concrete-curing process takes up to 10 hours. All work is weather-dependent.

Motorists can expect delays and should plan their commute accordingly. For more information on road conditions and travel alerts, please visit our Website at www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/ or dial 5-1-1.

The Washington State Patrol will be patrolling both work zones. WSDOT reminds motorists to please slow down when entering a work zone and “Give ‘em a Brake.” Since statistics show that in most work zone collisions, it is the driver or passenger injured or killed, the life you’re saving could be your own.
