BELLINGHAM – Drivers who regularly commute on Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) will need to plan a few extra minutes into their drive next Monday and Tuesday, July 28 and 29. Crews will close a lane to take core samples from the roadway.

WSDOT crews will intermittently close one lane of the highway from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The closures will take place between milepost 3, just east of Britton Road, and milepost 20, near the Coal Creek bridge. Crews will take core samples of the roadway to investigate it for future paving and maintenance projects.

Crews will drill into the road and remove a small circular core sample that can be used to check the depth and a representative sample of the roadway. The hole will be patched before drivers are allowed back on the road.
