WENATCHEE – To improve safety, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) believes left turns should be prohibited on and off US 2/97 at School Street, north of Wenatchee. There is a public open house scheduled at the Sunnyslope Elementary School on Thursday, May 15th, so we can find out how the project would affect those who use the intersection.
As development increases in the Sunnyslope area, so has traffic. There have been 19 people injured (2 of them, severely) in crashes in the intersection over the past five years. Left turns from US 2/97 to School Street and from School Street left onto US 2/97 would no longer be possible if we move ahead with a plan that puts concrete median barrier between the east and west bound lanes of the highway through the intersection. The barrier could be installed as early as this summer or fall. Right turns in and out of School Street on both sides of the highway would still be allowed.
At the open house, the public is encouraged to look at the available alternatives, talk to our engineers and tell us what you think.
