OLYMPIA – With short and long-term weather forecasts indicating more typical April weather, WSDOT reminds drivers it’s time to remove studded tires.
“Our decision was based on an assessment from around the state which indicates above freezing temperatures, limited moisture and a general warming trend as the weekend approaches,” said Chris Christopher, WSDOT Co-Director for Maintenance and Operations. “There may be some below freezing temperatures on the higher elevation roadways but we don’t see the possibility of any long-term freezing events on many of the state’s highways.”
The last day to legally use studded tires this season in Washington is Saturday, April 5. WSDOT worked closely with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), which is announcing the same decision.
Washington State Patrol troopers will enforce a $124 fine for those who keep their studded tires on beyond the deadline.
“This unusual late season snow seems to be over. We appear headed to a more typical April weather pattern across the state,” said Christopher. “We still encourage drivers to be prepared when driving in the mountains.”
WSDOT, in conjunction with ODOT officials, extended the official March 31 deadline to April 5 so drivers would be able to keep their studded tires on through the most recent winter weather pattern, plus have time to remove the tires.
WSDOT officials do advise drivers to carry tire chains and monitor weather forecasts as well as the WSDOT Web site at www.wsdot.wa.gov. For those driving over the mountains, before leaving home, find out about the driving conditions and prepare your vehicle. Safe drivers know the weather, and they know their limits. Remember, ice and snow, take it slow, or just don't go.

WSDOT wants motorists to be aware that a variety of studded tire alternatives are available and that they can continue to use other approved traction tires. WSDOT lists alternatives to studded tires and the damage studded tires do to state highways on its web site at http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/winter/studtire.htm.
