KELSO – An opportunity for the public to learn more about the SR 4, Rock Stabilization project, and the traffic impacts associated with it, will take place February 6, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The public is invited to join the project team at an Open House from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cowlitz PUD, located at 961 12th Avenue in Longview.

This rock stabilization project will yield safety improvements to the State Route 4 corridor between mileposts 45.92 and 45.95, just east of County Line Park. Crews will remove loose rock, unstable soil, trees and other debris from this slope. Crews will also install a cable fence along the slope to reduce the risk of rocks falling onto the highway.

In order to safely perform this work, WSDOT will have to fully close SR 4 for scheduled 45-minute stretches, allowing traffic to pass for fifteen minutes, every hour, on the hour. The road closures will begin at 8:15 a.m. Monday through Friday and the road will reopen by 5 p.m. each day. This schedule will remain in place for approximately three weeks so crews can safely scale the loose rock. Given the unpredictable nature of the rocks, however, longer closures may be needed in order to safely clear the road.
