LILLIWAUP – Work to stabilize a slope on U.S. 101 requires major traffic revisions, including a reduced speed limit from 40 mph to 25 mph near the town of Lilliwaup in Mason County.

WSDOT estimates the revisions will be in place through the second half of February, while crews stabilize an embankment that washed out during the Dec. 4 flooding event.

Crews will reduce the highway to one lane on Monday, Jan. 14, near Holiday Hill (milepost 329.6) so crews can conduct a preliminary investigation of the soil in the area. Engineers need to know the types of soils they are dealing with before they can determine exactly how to stabilize the slope.

Drivers can expect flagger-controlled, alternating traffic 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Tuesday night, crews will install a temporary barrier around the work area, taking away the southbound lane. Stop signs will be installed for southbound and northbound drivers, as traffic will need to alternate while the work is being done. Drivers should treat this intersection as a two-way stop and be extra attentive while driving this stretch of roadway.
