EVERETT – A break in wet weather allowed paving crews to complete all travel lanes on southbound I-5 in Everett between SR 526 and the Broadway ramps. Crews still need to finish paving the shoulders both south and northbound.

Construction crews were scrambling to get the lanes paved before temperatures dropped too low to pave and during fewer and fewer dry nights.

“Getting these lanes paved puts us in a much better position to get the rest of the paving work done without causing long delays for drivers,” said Project Director Mike Cotten.

This weekend, drivers should expect nightly lane closures in both directions. These closures depend on dry weather and could be delayed until the next available dry night.

  • Friday, October 12 – Crews will close one lane of southbound I-5 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Crews will close one lane of northbound I-5 from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday.
  • Saturday, October 13 – Crews will close one lane of southbound I-5 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday. Crews will close two lanes of northbound I-5 from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Sunday, October 14 – Crews will close one lane of northbound I-5 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday.

Construction crews will take advantage of the dry weather forecast to complete other project work too. Drivers should expect all but one lane to be closed on northbound I-5 between the exit to 41st Street and Everett Avenue between 11 p.m. Saturday night to 8 a.m. Sunday morning for striping work.

The new pavement is just one part of a $263 million project to add HOV lanes and make other improvements to I-5 in Everett between SR 526 and the Snohomish River Bridge. The project is scheduled to be complete by June 2008. You can find more details about the I-5 Everett HOV freeway expansion project by visiting www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I5/HOVSR526toUS2/.
