BURLINGTON – Drivers can expect detours and lane closures for most of October on SR 20 and Memorial Highway (SR 536) west of Burlington. Crews will rebuild the intersection where the two highways meet and open a section of the new eastbound SR 20 lanes.
Crews will close all SR 20 lanes Monday night, Oct.1 at the intersection to install temporary lane stripes and barricades.
Immediately following the SR 20 closure, crews will temporarily block access to and from Memorial Highway for 21 days where it ends at SR 20 to better align the highway with SR 20 and the new eastbound lanes.
Closure Schedule
- 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, Oct. 1 - SR 20 closed at Memorial Highway. Traffic will be detoured via Avon Allen Road, Memorial Hwy (SR 536), Young Road, and Best Road. Trucks will not be detoured off the highway.
- 6 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2 to Monday, Oct. 22 – SR 536 closed at SR 20. Traffic detoured via Young Road and Best Road. Trucks are advised to find alternate routes to SR 20
- Trucks wider than 11 feet are restricted through the work zone Oct. 1 to Oct. 31.
When crews reopen the SR 20 and Memorial Highway intersection, all drivers, both east- and westbound, will be temporarily shifted to the new eastbound lanes between Higgins Airport Road and Memorial Highway. East- and westbound drivers will share the new lanes while crews widen the existing highway and rebuild a bridge.
This work is part of a larger project that will widen SR 20 to four lanes from Memorial Highway to I-5 and improve the on- and off-ramps at I-5. The $110 million project is funded by the 2003 Nickel Funding Package and will improve safety and relieve congestion for the 20,000 drivers that use the highway daily.
