BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) maintenance crews will apply herbicides in mid-October to control weeds growing within five feet of the pavement along SR 305 on Bainbridge Island.

This spraying rids the roadside of weeds that have popped up along the shoulder since completion of a paving project last year. The spraying is also part of WSDOT’s integrated vegetation management (IVM) plan.

One goal in WSDOT's Bainbridge Island IVM plan is establishing a cover of low-growing grasses along the edge of pavement along SR 305, reducing the need for mowing and eliminating further herbicide use.

Removing the weeds, tree seedlings and blackberry vines is necessary so the young grass planted last year has the opportunity to fill in. The most effective way to accomplish this is through a properly timed spot application of a selective herbicide that eliminates unwanted weeds without damaging the grasses.

It may be necessary for crews to repeat this process for up to three years following construction to establish a solid stand of desirable grass and eradicate the need for future herbicide use.

WSDOT will apply the herbicide tryclopyr directly to the target vegetation with a hand-held spray nozzle. The herbicide product is called Garlon 3A, which is non-toxic to mammals and fish.

Fall is the best time to apply this weed-control product. Application is weather dependent.
