Date:  Monday, September 17, 2007

Contact: Dustin Terpening, WSDOT Communications - 360-757-5997

WSDOT will close the Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Coal Creek, about 2½ miles east of Glacier, while crews reinforce the eroding stream bank and bridge footings with large boulders.

Crews must use a large crane that will block the entire highway to lower the boulders into place.

About 1,500 vehicles a day travel this stretch of highway, primarily en route to various trails and outdoor recreation activities. WSDOT will post signs notifying drivers of the upcoming closure.

There is no detour route around the closure.
