RENTON –– Next week crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will be paving and preparing the shoulders for future widening on southbound SR 167 in Renton. Construction closures affecting I-405 and SR 167 traffic in Renton and Tukwila the week of September 15-21 include:
I-405/SR 167 Interchange
- Saturday night crews will close the southbound HOV lane between the I-405/SR 167 Interchange and SW 41st Street from 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday morning to grind and pave the median.
- Sunday through Thursday nights, drivers should expect nightly closures of up to two southbound lanes between the I-405/SR 167 Interchange and SW 41st Street from 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. while crews install electrical lines, temporary barriers and drainage controls. Crews will close the HOV lane at 8 pm and one additional lane by midnight, leaving only one lane open to traffic. All lanes will be open by 6 a.m. each morning.
The I-405 Renton Widening Project, also known as the I-405/I-5 to SR 169 Stage 1 - Widening Project, is the first stage of improvements on I-405 between I-5 and State Route 167. This work will help relieve congestion at one of the worst I-405 bottlenecks by adding lanes and improving merging conditions for the drive in and out of Renton and Tukwila. In Stage 1 of this project, from September 2007 to spring 2010, construction crews will:
- Add an auxiliary lane southbound on SR 167 from I-405 to SW 41st Street in Renton
- Add one lane in each direction on I-405 between I-5 and SR 167
- Reconfigure the SR 181 and SR 167 interchanges, including improving HOV connections between SR 167 and I-405
To help avoid traffic congestion during construction, WSDOT encourages drivers to:
