WSDOT and contractor Tri-State Construction have been working through the summer season to eliminate barriers to fish passage on Swamp Creek and Catherine Creek. Some culverts under SR 92, I-5 and I-405 have design flaws that make it harder for fish to travel through them.

Fish face a large drop in water level from the culvert under SR 92 on Catherine Creek.

Crews working on this project are installing fish weirs, or small dams, that will raise the level of the creeks, allowing fish to swim through them freely.

Crews have completed the weirs where Swamp Creek passes beneath I-5, slowing the flow of the water to make it easier for fish to swim upstream.

Each location is unique. Where Swamp Creek crosses under I-5, the creek flows too fast for fish to be able to swim upstream. Where Swamp Creek crosses beneath I-405, the water is too shallow for the fish to swim in. And on Catherine Creek at SR 92, there is a large drop at the end of the culvert preventing fish from swimming upstream.

Fish will now be able to swim up Swamp Creek under I-5 with the aide of the new weirs.
