SEATTLE – Drivers are about 36 hours away from wide-open lanes on northbound I-5 through Seattle. Tonight, crews will continue paving the mainline of I-5 and then move to the shoulders Friday.
“We’re in the home stretch of this project,” said Regional Administrator Lorena Eng. “We couldn’t be more excited. Drivers have been so patient and our crews are working very hard.”
Construction
Crews have been paving since 6 a.m. this morning and will continue to pave until 9 p.m. tonight. They’ll take a rest and be back in the work zone to pave again at 6 a.m. They hope to be done by mid-afternoon and will then begin striping the roadway.
After striping they’ll use Friday night to move barrier and open all lanes by 5 a.m. Saturday.
The Spokane St./West Seattle Bridge on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close at 10 p.m. tonight and reopen Friday morning at 5 a.m.
Keep track of construction work as it happens at www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/I5/SpokaneStreetBridgeRepair/traffic.htm.
Weather Update
Good weather is still in the forecast until Saturday so crew are not concerned about any rain drops getting in the way of any more work.
Traffic
Travel time through the work zone is still hovering around 10 mph. Traffic today was consistently backed up to Albro and it took between 20-25 minutes to get through the work zone.
During the 19-day around-the-clock closure, crews working for Concrete Barrier Inc. broke apart old concrete surrounding 34 old, worn-out expansion joints, installed new expansion joints and repaved 1.13 miles of northbound I-5 between Spokane St and I-90.
