SEATTLE – A smaller work zone marks the final phase of construction on Interstate 5 just south of downtown Seattle. At 5 a.m. today, crews opened all lanes north of the exit to I-90, James and Madison Streets. However, there are still only two open lanes between Spokane Street and I-90. Back-ups stretch to Albro Place. Drivers are still encouraged to take alternate routes.

The next major shift will be at 5 a.m., Saturday August 25, when crews complete this phase of work and open all lanes of northbound I-5 between Spokane Street and I-90.

Construction
Crews completed 3,700 linear feet of paving last night and resumed their work today at 6 a.m. They will pave all day today and plan to finish the remaining 3,800 linear feet by tonight. Barring equipment malfunctions or other unexpected delays, crews will place stripes and other markings on the pavement tomorrow as they prepare to open all lanes to traffic Saturday morning.

Traffic
Congestion continues as the morning commute on I-5 ends. This morning back-ups reached Albro Place and it took drivers up to 30 minutes to reach Holgate, where traffic flowed smoothly on the newly opened lanes.

Tonight, crews will close the Spokane Street/West Seattle Bridge on-ramp from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
