Expect Delays in South Oak Harbor Sunday Evening

Date:  Thursday, July 26, 2007

OAK HARBOR - Weekend travelers combined with construction will mean backups for SR 20 drivers Sunday evening in south Oak Harbor. WSDOT will dig into a hill along SR 20 to level the highway and improve visibility for drivers. WSDOT advises drivers to alter their schedules and find alternate routes through town because there will be delays Sunday evening.

Crews will work around the clock from 5 p.m. Sunday, July 29, to 4 p.m. Friday, August 3 to shave up to eight feet from the top of the hill between 24th Street and Eagle Vista Avenue. Access to and from some local side streets will close. Detour routes will be posted.

Crews will close SR 20 to one lane from 5 p.m. Sunday, July 29 to 6 a.m. Monday, July 30 while they install guardrail and lay a temporary driving surface with ground asphalt. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work zone. Two lanes will be open Monday morning.

Delays are expected to be as long as 20 to 30 minutes near 24th Street and Eagle Vista Avenue, between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Delays should taper off to ten minutes by 8 p.m.

Crews will temporarily install the guardrail to protect drivers from a steep drop next to the highway where crews are digging.

The temporary driving surface will be rough and will force drivers to slow down to 20 mph. Drivers should expect delays through the work zone.

The following weekend, August 5, crews will start similar work between Harbor Vista Circle and Capital Street. The hill cut will not be as deep and they won’t need to install guardrail.

Drivers are advised sign up for SR 20 e-mail updates to get the latest information on delays and possible detours on this and other SR 20 projects by going to www.wsdot.wa.gov/northwest/emailupdates.
