TACOMA – A ramp-paving improvement project begins Monday on an 11-mile stretch of I-5 from Gravelly Lake Drive in Lakewood to the Puyallup River Bridge in Tacoma. These improvements are expected to take four months to complete.

Next week, motorists should expect single, right-lane closures in both directions of I-5 at the Gravelly Lake Drive interchange. On- and off-ramp closures will occur throughout the four-month project. Drivers may encounter delays and are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly.

Most of the work is scheduled during the evening hours to lessen the impact to motorists. Typical project hours are 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday evenings, crews start at 10 p.m. and end Saturdays at 9 a.m.

Work on this $2.5 million improvement project includes:

• Re-paving a single southbound lane of I-5 from the Bay Street vicinity through the McKinley Oxing area
• Re-paving on-and off -ramps at the Gravelly Lake Drive, Bridgeport Way and the 72nd/74th interchanges
• Re-paving the north and southbound collector distributor lanes between72nd and 48th streets
• Safety improvements to existing guardrail
• New pavement markings and permanent signing
• Replacing damaged traffic-sensor loops
