BREMERTON – WSDOT and local officials are teaming up with contractor Tri-State Construction Inc. to kick off the SR 304 Bremerton Tunnel project, which redirects off-loading ferry traffic away from the downtown area.

The public is invited to join Congressman Norm Dicks, WSDOT Chief of Staff Paula Hammond, and others Friday, July 6 at 10 a.m. for a ground-breaking ceremony. The event is at the former Les Schwab building, 628 Burwell Street, Bremerton.

This $30.7 million project reduces the pedestrian/vehicle conflict by building a 950-foot-long tunnel that moves a substantial portion of off-loading vehicle ferry traffic through the new tunnel and onto State Route 304/Burwell Street.

Booming growth in the downtown Bremerton area combined with the rising number of ferry commuters has created a congested thoroughfare for drivers and pedestrians. Building the tunnel improves pedestrian safety and relieves congestion in the burgeoning, bustling downtown area.
