SEATTLE – WSDOT crews will be working this Sunday morning near downtown Seattle in preparation for major Interstate 5 construction this summer.

At 3 a.m. Sunday, April 1, crews will close the right lane of northbound I-5 between Spokane Street and I-90. Crews will reopen the lane by 10 a.m. Sunday.

The closures will allow crews to investigate and clean three of the 33 bridge expansion joints that WSDOT will replace this August. Sunday’s prep work will help potential contractors troubleshoot possible demolition and construction methods.

This summer's construction will significantly affect traffic, particularly during 19 continuous days of intense construction from Aug. 10 to Aug. 29 when crews will close several lanes of northbound I-5 at all times, leaving only two or three lanes open to workday traffic. During the 19-day closure crews will replace the expansion joints on the northbound I-5 bridge between Spokane Street and I-90, and resurface the northbound lanes.

Drivers also can expect periodic closures of the Spokane Street and Columbian Way on-ramps to northbound I-5, and the northbound I-5 exits to Fourth Avenue South, I-90, and James, Madison and Dearborn streets.

Drivers can find out more about the project, and learn how to take steps now that could ease their commutes this August by visiting the project Web site at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I5/SpokaneStreetBridgeRepair.
