MALTBY – After steady rains delayed work by a week, WSDOT and contractor Wilder Construction are set to close SR 524 this weekend. Breaks in the rain this week allowed crews to complete prep work for the total closure of SR 524 from SR 9 to SR 522.

“As long as the forecast holds, we should be able to go ahead with our work this weekend,” said WSDOT Project Engineer John Chi.

Crews need dry weather to install a new 64 foot-long culvert 9 feet under the surface of SR 524 and repave the road in time for the Monday morning commute. The new culvert will reduce the risk of flooding on SR 524 and help fish migrate and spawn.

Closure:

  • 10 p.m. Friday, March 30 – 5 a.m. Monday, April 2: Crews will close SR 524 between SR 9 and SR 522. Local access will be allowed.
  • Crews will provide a detour route utilizing SR 9, SR 522, Broadway Avenue and 180th Street SE. Drivers should plan ahead and expect lengthy delays. This work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.

Drivers can view traffic cameras and a detour map at the SR 9 Widening project Web page: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR9/sr522_212thst.

We ask drivers to help during construction by:

  • planning before you go
  • checking real-time traffic information by calling 511 or visiting our Web site at www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/seattle
  • taking alternate routes, including State Route 522 and SR 9
  • carpooling
  • riding the bus
  • allowing extra time
