NASELLE – The Dismal Nitch Safety Rest Area on State Route 401, one mile east of the US 101 Astoria-Megler Bridge, will reopen to the public on Thursday, March 28, announced the Washington State Department of Transportation.

For the next few months, there will be no drinking water or sink water available until a new well system is installed. In the meantime, waterless hand sanitizers are being installed and will be in place upon reopening the rest area. It is anticipated that the new water system will be functional by early summer 2007.

The state-owned rest area was closed for the winter season on November 13, 2006. The rest area closes every year due to winter weather conditions. However, the earlier-than-normal closure last year was due to high levels of water resulting from record rainfall in early November.
