MALTBY – If the weather cooperates, WSDOT and Wilder Construction plan to completely close SR 524 between SR 9 and SR 522 next weekend. During the weekend-long closure, crews will install a new culvert at Whistle Creek, just east of SR 9.

This work is weather dependent, and may be delayed to another weekend. The contractor will review the weather forecast in the days leading up to the closure and decide whether to proceed with the plan.

Closure:

  • 10 p.m. Friday, March 23 – 5 a.m. Monday, March 26: Crews will close SR 524 between SR 9 and SR 522. Local access will be allowed.
  • Crews will provide a detour route utilizing SR 9, SR 522, Broadway Avenue and 180th Street SE. Drivers should plan ahead and expect lengthy delays. This work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.

Measuring in at 8 feet wide, 6 feet tall and 64 feet long, the new culvert dwarfs the old culvert, which is only 18 inches in diameter. To install the new, bigger culvert crews must dig 9 feet deep under SR 524. Once installed, they will add 73 tons of stream bed cobbles along the bottom of the metal culvert to create eddies and currents in the creek that help fish as they migrate and spawn.

This work is part of a larger project to widen SR 9 from SR 522 just north of Woodinville to 212th Street north of Maltby Road. When this project is finished in the spring of 2008, two miles of SR 9 will be transformed from a two-lane, rural highway into a four-lane, divided urban highway with additional turn lanes at major intersections. Widening SR 9 and improving intersections will relieve traffic congestion and improve traffic flow and safety for the 33,000 drivers who use the highway each day.

This project is funded with $40.4 million from the 2003 Legislative Funding Package. For more information, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR9/sr522_212thst.
