VANCOUVER - The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will host a community scoping meeting and open house on Thursday, February 22, from 4-7 p.m. to solicit input on the SR 502 Corridor Widening Project. Residents, business, and property owners are invited to attend the event at the Battle Ground High School cafeteria, 300 West Main Street.

The meeting will allow members of the public to learn more about the project; meet members of the project team; share their knowledge of the area and their ideas for improvements the corridor; and voice their concerns about the SR 502 Corridor Widening Project. Information on the Columbia River Crossing, I-5/SR 502 Interchange, and I-5/SR 501 Ridgefield Interchange projects will also be provided.

Scoping is an early step in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) study of the project area between Battle Ground and the new I-5 interchange that will begin construction this Spring. The 30-day Scoping Period is from February 6 – March 9, 2007. During this time, interested individuals, groups, and agencies can provide comments by mail or email to WSDOT. Participants also can make written comments at the February 22 meeting regarding issues and concerns that should be considered during the NEPA process.

Over the next three decades, the traffic volume on the SR 502 Corridor between Battle Ground and I-5 is projected to more than double as population growth and job development expand in the area. This projected growth will further increase congestion on an already busy road.

WSDOT is planning to tackle this issue by widening and making other improvements to the five-mile corridor between the new I-5 interchange and Battle Ground city limits near NE 102nd Avenue. The exact nature of the Corridor improvements will be developed over the next three years as the corridor is studied and the public’s comments are considered. In general, the project will look to widen the road from two to four travel lanes and address turning movements and capacity issues at key intersections and other access points along the roadway.
