TACOMA – Pierce County drivers will have to wait yet another day for their first HOV lane.

Today’s wet weather delays the opening of the HOV lane on eastbound SR 16 until Saturday morning. The plan was to get the striping done tonight and open the carpool lane Friday morning.

The revised plan is to do the striping starting at 9 p.m. Friday and open the lane Saturday morning, if the weather cooperates. The work requires single-lane closures overnight Friday between Union and Jackson avenues.

The new three-mile carpool lane is the first segment of 79 miles of HOV lanes planned for Pierce County.

Near the Center Street curve, the HOV lane reverts to a general-purpose lane. Drivers are advised to move left before getting to Union Avenue, where the third lane drops completely.
