US 2, SR 542, 547 and 548 - Highway Resurfacing

Project news

  • Starting in late July, travelers will experience lengthy delays during the second phase of this preservation work.
  • Construction updates are located on the Whatcom, Skagit and Island County construction page.
  • This project was awarded to Doolittle Construction, LLC.

Needs & benefits

This resurfacing project will rehabilitate the existing pavement and preserve more than 35 miles of roadway, on four different highways in King, Snohomish and Whatcom counties.

Resurfacing the highways preserves the integrity and life of the roadway. This project, which involves repairing pavement, sealing cracks and putting down a new thin surface over the highway, helps prevent damage that can lead to costly emergency repairs and provide a smoother ride for the traveling public.

Crews will preserve:

Snohomish County

  • US 2 between Mount Index Road near Index and Eagle Falls west of Halford.

King County

  • US 2 between Northeast 182nd Street/east of Baring and Northeast Old Cascade Highway/Money Creek campground.

Whatcom County

  • SR 542/Mount Baker Highway between Britton Road in Bellingham and St. Peter’s Catholic Church/Markel Road west of Kendall.
  • SR 547/Kendall Road between Peaceful Valley Drive and Saar Creek/Hillview Road.
  • SR 548/Grandview Road between North Starr Road and the Blaine Road roundabout.

Travelers who use these stretches should expect lengthy delays during multiple stages of work once this project begins. Work will happen during daytime hours and flaggers and a pilot car will alternate traffic through a long work zone.

When resurfacing work is complete, people driving on these stretches will have a new preserved surface that will help keep all travelers moving safely and efficiently for years to come.

This project is a cost-effective way to preserve the highway and help prevent costly and unexpected emergency repairs.
