US 195 - Thorpe Rd Intersection Improvements

Project news

This project has been awarded to Shamrock Paving, Inc.

Needs & benefits

This project is located on US 195 between MP 94.44 and 95.44 in Spokane County. The project will involve hot mix asphalt paving, illumination, and guardrail improvements. This project will also be constructing a new feature for our area called "J-Turns".

The J-turn is an alternative to having an open median along a four-lane highway. Motorists will no longer utilize the center median to cross fast-moving lanes of traffic to get to the opposing lanes. Instead of drivers crossing the center median to get to opposing lanes, drivers will turn right to go north or southbound on US 195, merge into the left lane, and then make a u-turn in the direction they intend to travel, in the J-turn. Drivers will have to drive slightly further to make the J-turn however, they can take the same amount of time waiting for a safe and appropriate gap to cross traffic in a traditional median. When completed the project will include two "J-turns", to improve the intersection safety by reducing conflict points.

US 195 and Thorpe Road intersection improvements, come from low-cost improvement options proposed in 2016. Learn more about the original Hatch Road to Interstate 90 project.
