SR 240 - Richland Corridor Improvements - Project survey 1 results

Thank you to everyone who participated in our initial survey that launched September 19, 2018. The goal of the survey was to get feedback on the major issues on SR 240, between I-182 and SR 225, and to understand how the people who use the corridor regularly want to see it improved. 2,494 people took part in the survey from September 19 through October 23.

The questions on the survey were:

  • How often do you travel the SR 240 corridor between I-182 and the SR 225 intersection?
    • 75% of respondents travel the SR 240 corridor at least five days per week

 

  • Do you work, do business, or live near the SR 240 corridor?
    • 86% of respondents work, do business, or live near the SR 240 corridor

 

  • What method of transportation do you use along the SR 240 corridor?
    • 93% of respondents travel the corridor in personal cars

 

  • What is the biggest problem you experience along the SR 240 corridor?
    • Too much traffic - 34%
    • Too many traffic lights - 17%
    • Unsafe passing - 16%
    • Signal timing - 13%
    • Unsafe lane changes or turns - 8%
    • Other - 8%

 

  • Have you ever made changes to your route to avoid the SR 240 corridor or adjusted your schedule to avoid peak travel times?
    • Four out of five respondents (82%) have made changes to their route or adjusted their travel schedule

 

  • What is the biggest change you would like to see along the SR 240 corridor?
    • More highway lanes - 31%
    • Better timing of traffic lights - 20%
    • Fewer traffic signals - 13%
    • Reduced access to the highway from side roads - 12%
    • Create an HOV lane - 6%
    • Add roundabouts - 4%
    • Other - 15%

 

  • How can we improve bike and pedestrian access along this corridor?
    • Most respondents made suggestions that fell into the following categories
      • Separate cyclists and pedestrians from vehicle traffic
      • Make the intersection less dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists
      • Better maintenance of existing paths

 

  • What are your thoughts on driving along the SR 240 corridor?
    • Most respondents wrote about safety issues or congestion. Some representative quotes are below
      • "Some of the drivers on SR 240 have no clue that a speed limit exists or they definitely do not know safe driving habits."
      • "At peak hours it is incredibly dangerous due to tailgating, passing on hills or other limited sight areas, multiple car passing, excess speeds."
      • "Many aggressive drivers. Needs to be better patrolled."
      • "I stopped taking this route to work because it is too crowded, people drive too fast and chaotic, and the lights are not timed well."

 

  • Some respondents suggested improvements such as the following
    • "Get rid of the traffic lights and add on-ramps and off-ramps like normal freeways."
    • "Create interchanges with overpasses instead of stoplights."
