SR 163 - N of N 54th St to Point Defiance Landing - Paving

Project news

  • During the overnight hours Tuesday, Sept. 24, crews finished paving and installed temporary striping. The new holding lanes at the Point Definace Landing Ferry Terminal are open to traffic.
  • Crews will install final striping in approximatly 4 weeks, towards the end of October, after the new roadway surface has cured. This is weather dependent work.
  • Crews will repave a section of North Pearl Street/SR 163 in Tacoma between North 54th Street and Point Defiance Landing.
  • All work will take place at night, Sunday through Thursday, between the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During construction, overnight drivers will experience one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers.
  • While the ferry is in operation, access to the toll booth will not be restricted.

Needs & benefits

After years of wear, a section of North Pearl Street/SR 163 just north of North 54th Street to Point Defiance Landing will receive a new roadway surface. This project also expands the ferry holding lanes from two lanes to four, and upgrades the tolling communication system for Washington State Ferries.

This preservation work will repair existing asphalt cracks and ruts which can create potholes that may require occasional emergency repairs and untimely lane closures.
