Overview
Contractor crews built a protective wall of rocks, logs, root wads and plants to stabilize the eroding Pilchuck River bank before it undermined SR 92 west of Granite Falls.
The river bank was eroding at a rate of 30-40 feet each year. By the summer of 2016, it was within 40 feet of SR 92.
Improves safety
The protective wall prevents the river from continuing to erode the river bank, reducing the risk of the highway being seriously undermined or destroyed.
Protects environment
Shrubs and trees previously lost to erosion were replaced with new native vegetation that helps prevent additional erosion and will improve the existing wildlife habitat.
Economic incentive
SR 92 is an important east-west highway in Snohomish County. Completing the work before the road was severely damaged or even destroyed saved millions of dollars in emergency replacement costs and keeps freight and commuters moving.
Partnerships & cooperation
WSDOT coordinated this work and the construction impacts to the river and fish with the city of Granite Falls, Snohomish County, Department of Ecology and Tulalip Tribes.

In 2012, the Pilchuck River claimed the garage of a home near the river. The house also fell into the river.
