Project News

  • Those interested in weekly information on this project should sign up for Whatcom County email updates.

Overview
In 2019 WSDOT contractor crews will repave three miles of State Route 542 in both directions between I-5 and Britton Road. Along with this work highway crossings will be improved, in partnership with city of Bellingham, a stretch of sidewalk added and a culvert replaced near Dewey Road.

Why is WSDOT doing this project?
This stretch of SR 542 is a heavily traveled area through the city of Bellingham and Whatcom County which is used by more than 43,000 vehicles each day. Doing this work will keep the highway preserved, safe and provide a smoother trip for travelers.

How will this project affect me?
People driving and cycling should expect overnight lane closures Sunday evenings through Friday mornings. There could be ground down sections of road around-the-clock. Travelers should plan extra time into their trips during this construction. People on bikes should consider alternate routes during all hours of this construction. Crews will do pedestrians crossing improvements during the day. Those using intersections in this stretch should plan for possible detours to other crossing areas.

The End Result
When the project is finished, it will provide Bellingham area drivers, cyclists and pedestrians smoother and easier access along this busy stretch of SR 542.

Needs & benefits

  • Preserves infrastructure.
