SR 3 - SR 304 Interchange Improvements Project - Bremerton

Project news

  • Crews have opened to traffic the new southbound lane on SR 3. Portions of the shoulder were rebuilt and the highway restriped to create a second southbound lane through the interchange.
  • Drivers traveling on westbound Charleston Boulevard approaching SR 3 will notice a new second lane through the overpass, and a new merge into the added southbound lane of SR 3.
  • Funding for this project is part of the Connecting Washington Transportation Revenue Package.

Why is WSDOT making modifications to the interchange of SR 3 and SR 304?
Southbound State Route 3 approaching SR 304 in Bremerton was the location of regular congestion during the afternoon commute. The resulting congestion increases delay and travel time.

The previous configuration had southbound SR 3 merging from two lanes to one. This project used the existing highway footprint to extend the second lane of SR 3 from where it currently ends for roughly one mile.

Crews also repaved southbound SR 3 between milepost 36 to 36.8 and repaired a bridge element by removing a bump at end of SR 304 bridge approaching SR 3.

This construction project is the result of a WSDOT study that solicited feedback from commuters, residents, and local businesses who rely on both highways. WSDOT thanks all who gave input on how to relieve SR 3 congestion.

The End Result
The project will improve traffic flow on southbound SR 3 through this area.

This project also has new traffic cameras at the intersection of SR 3 and SR 304 and Loxie Eagans Boulevard.

Needs & benefits

  • Decreased congestion for southbound SR 3 drivers
  • Added traffic cameras which help WSDOT manage traffic and relay roadway information to the public.
