This roundabout project will improve help safety during peak congestion and keep drivers moving through this area.

Needs & benefits

Why is WSDOT making safety improvements to this intersection?
Improving safety on state highways is a top priority for WSDOT. Since 2011, law enforcement responded to 25 crashes at this intersection. Eleven of those collisions involved injuries. Statistics show that roundabouts help reduce injury and deadly crashes by more than 75 percent.

Island Transit also services stops on each side of the highway, the current intersection does not include safe pedestrian access across SR 20 for those using public transit. A roundabout will include pedestrian crossing areas and safe islands to help people safely cross the highway when accessing the nearby bus stops.

This roundabout will also allow drivers north and south of the intersection to choose right-in right-out options from other intersections and driveways by providing a U-turn option at the new roundabout.

The End Result
When this project is finished it will improve safety and keep drivers moving as traffic volumes in this area increase.

Building a roundabout at this intersection will:

  • Reduce the number of injury crashes, supporting Washington's strategic highway Target Zero plan.
  • Keep drivers moving as additional vehicles are added to the road in this area.


  • Summer/fall 2017 - Solicit community feedback.
  • Spring 2018 - Decide on appropriate design to improve safety at this location.
  • Winter 2018/2019 - Advertise project for competitive bidding.
  • Spring 2019 - Project begins.
  • Fall 2019 - Project complete.
