Olympic Region Weekly Construction and Traffic Updates

The following Washington State Department of Transportation projects are expected to have some travel impacts. Motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling in these areas and remember to “give ‘em a brake” in construction zones.

PLEASE NOTE: Most activities are subject to good weather conditions and work plans are subject to weather-related adjustments.

Clallam County

CONSTRUCTION

US 101 & SR 109 Myrtle Street to Endresen Avenue/US 101 Eisenhower Street–Sidewalk, ADA Ramp Safety and Mobility project

This $1.8 million project adds sidewalks and ADA ramps as well as lighting and pavement repairs to sections of US 101 and SR 109 in Hoquiam.

DESCRIPTION: Weather permitting, crews will place brick pavers and install traffic signal loops.
LOCATION: Both directions of US 101 and SR 109, SR 109 from Myrtle Street to Endresen Avenue and US 101 at Eisenhower Street, US 101 mileposts 85.67 to 89.10 and SR 109 mileposts 0.00 to 1.8.
EXPECT: Crews close Seventh Street during work hours on Wednesday. Short-term shoulder closures on Simpson Avenue Wednesday – Friday.

Jefferson County

CONSTRUCTION

SR 104, Hood Canal Bridge Project

The bridge is open to traffic following a five-week closure while the east half was replaced.
The project also widened the west half of the bridge – to match the new east half – and retrofitted mechanical and electrical systems. WSDOT and contractor Kiewit-General are currently conducting functional testing and reviewing all systems on the west half of the bridge. There are still more than two dozen contract employees continuing to work on the west half through February 2010.
EXPECT: No daytime test openings are scheduled, though bridge openings for marine vessels will occur as needed.

Test openings of up to 90 minutes are scheduled from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. weeknights through late February.

Drivers will also encounter shoulder closures from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 – Thursday, Feb 11.

SR 20, US 101 to Eaglemount Road

This $24.3 million project improves safety by replacing the last remaining at-grade intersection on SR 16 where traffic crosses the median. Traffic is now on the new east and westbound lanes.

DESCRIPTION: Landscaping.
LOCATION: Both directions SR 16, at Burley Olalla Road, milepost 19.
EXPECT: Shoulder closures along the SR 16 on- and off-ramps at Burley Olalla Road.

This project replaces the existing timber-trestle bridge with a concrete structure that offers wider lanes and shoulders, and increases safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

CONSTRUCTION

I-5, Port of Tacoma Road to King County Line – Add HOV Lanes

This project was chosen as a critical shovel-ready project as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (federal stimulus bill). Federal stimulus money (approximately $35.3 million) helps funds this construction project, which supports an estimated 130 jobs.
This project widens I-5 for HOV lanes in each direction between the Port of Tacoma Road and the King/Pierce County line.
DAYS: Monday – Friday
TIME: Daytime: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nighttime: 7 p.m. to 4 a.m.
DESCRIPTION: During the daytime, crews will install drainage, electrical systems and perform excavation; barrier and bridge work in the median. At nighttime, crews will be placing barriers along the outside lanes in both directions of I-5 and in the median.
LOCATION: Both directions of I-5, between Port of Tacoma Road and the King County Line, mileposts 136 to 139.
EXPECT: Crews close the right lane of northbound I-5 from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. overnight Monday. Crews close the left lane of southbound I-5 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. overnight Tuesday – Friday.

Motorists can also expect shoulder closures and may encounter construction vehicles entering and exiting the freeway median throughout the project limits between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday – Friday.

I-5/SR 16, Westbound Nalley Valley

This project increases safety, improves mobility and reduces congestion by building a new connection between westbound SR 16 and I-5.
DAYS: Tuesday and Wednesday
TIME: See times below.
DESCRIPTION: Setting column reinforcement.
LOCATION: Both directions of SR 16 in the vicinity of the I-5/SR 16 Nalley Valley Interchange.
EXPECT:

  • Crews close the left lane of northbound I-5 on-ramp to westbound SR 16 from 10 p.m. to midnight Tuesday evening.
  • The northbound I-5 on-ramp to westbound SR 16 will be closed from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday.

LONG-TERM CLOSURES: Sprague Avenue on-ramp to westbound SR 16 is closed. Ramp reopens in fall 2011. The Sprague Avenue on-ramp to eastbound SR 16 and the eastbound SR 16 off-ramp to Sprague Avenue are closed. The off-ramp reopens in fall 2011. The on-ramp reopens when the Eastbound Nalley Valley project is complete in 2013.

I-5, Berkeley Street to 47th Avenue Southwest – Median Barrier Replacement

This project replaces the median barrier on I-5 in Lakewood, from Berkeley Street to 47th Avenue Southwest.
DAYS: Wednesday

LOCATION: Northbound I-5, Berkeley Street to 47th Avenue Southwest, mileposts 122.13 to 126.19.
EXPECT: Mobile operation in the left lane.

SR 7, 34th Street Bridge Rehab

This City of Tacoma project repairs and paints the 34th Street Bridge.
EXPECT: No impact to traffic.

SR 16, Burnham Drive/Borgen Boulevard Interchange Improvements

This City of Gig Harbor project widens the westbound SR 16/Burnham Drive roundabout to two lanes; adds capacity to both east and westbound SR 16 off-ramps.
DAYS: Tuesday and Wednesday
TIME: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:
Roadway striping and setting temporary concrete barrier.
LOCATION: Both directions of SR 16, off-ramps to Burnham Drive, milepost 15.
EXPECT: Weather-dependent work requires the closure of the eastbound SR 16 on-ramp from Burnham Drive one night only between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 or Wednesday, Feb. 10.

SR 99, Holiday Motor Homes

This developer-funded project widens SR 99 and installs drainage structures and lighting.
EXPECT: No impact to traffic.

SR 162, Calistoga Street

This City of Orting project at the intersection of SR 162 (Washington Avenue) and Calistoga Street installs new signal and light poles, turn lanes, and new curb, gutter, sidewalk and ADA ramps. Project also includes improvements to storm drainage, utilities and retaining walls.
EXPECT: No work activities scheduled.

SR 410, 166th Avenue East Interchange

This developer-funded project improves the SR 410 and 166th Avenue interchange. Improvements include widening the eastbound SR 410 off-ramp to 166th Avenue East and installation of a new traffic signal and lighting system. Project also installs drainage systems, guardrail, sidewalk and permanent signage.

TIME: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION: Interchange improvement project.
LOCATION: Both directions of SR 410, at 166th Avenue East, milepost 11.50.
EXPECT: Shoulder closures.

SR 509, Puyallup River Bridge – Special Repairs

This project repairs bridge piers and replaces concrete girders damaged in 2002 by a rail car fire under the bridge. Construction began in October 2009 and is scheduled for completion June 2010. During construction, the speed limit in the work zone is reduced from 60 mph to 35 mph.

TIME: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
DESCRIPTION: Bridge repair.
LOCATION: Both directions of SR 509, from Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road, mileposts 0.99 to 2.44.
EXPECT: SR 509 is reduced to one lane in each direction between Port of Tacoma Road and Portland Avenue. Motorists can expect delays and congestion on SR 509, between Tacoma and Fife, during construction. Oversized loads are restricted on SR 509 in the work zone. The recommended alternate route is I-5 and I-705.

I-5, Lacey to Lakewood

• 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night Monday, Feb. 8 through Friday, Feb. 12
• 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 to 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13

Access to 117th Street South will be restricted to local traffic only.

CONSTRUCTION

I-5, Grand Mound to Maytown – Add Lanes

This project widens I-5 and builds new bridges between the Lewis/Thurston County border and Tumwater. Construction continues through fall 2010. One of two on-ramps to southbound I-5 from US 12 is closed. A traffic signal directs eastbound US 12 drivers headed to southbound I-5 to use the southbound loop on-ramp previously used only by westbound US 12 drivers.

DESCRIPTION: Crews continue bridge work at Maytown and widen the roadway to stage materials. Weather-depending, crews will do shoulder excavation and restripe the roadway for traffic shifts at Maytown. Grading and concrete barrier setting takes place at Prairie and Scatter creeks.
LOCATION: Both directions of I-5, from the Thurston-Lewis County Line to 113th Avenue Southwest, mileposts 85 to 97, and both directions of SR 121 at I-5, milepost 0.
EXPECT:
Tuesday and Wednesday:

• Northbound I-5 exits at Grand Mound (Exit 88A and Exits 88B) will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Both exits will not be closed at the same time.
Monday – Friday:
• Crews close the right lane of northbound I-5 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. This work is weather-dependant.
• Rolling slowdowns southbound I-5 from 6 to 10 a.m. and northbound I-5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Motorists traveling SR 121 at the I-5 interchange will encounter flagger-controlled, one-way alternating traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Drivers can also expect shoulder closures throughout the project limits.

I-5, Martin Way – Bike Lanes

The $1.16 million project connects a quarter-mile gap in Lacey’s bike-lane network and extends the left-turn lanes for vehicles at the congested I-5/Martin Way interchange. Pedestrian access through the work zone remains open during construction.
DAYS: Monday – Friday
TIME: Daytime: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nighttime: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
DESCRIPTION: Crews will be setting forms and pouring concrete for new sidewalks and curbs.
LOCATION: Both directions of Martin Way, at the I-5 interchange, milepost 109.
EXPECT: Drivers can expect single-lane closures in both directions of Martin Way from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. overnight Tuesday and Wednesday.
 
The sidewalks and shoulder are closed in both directions of Martin Way 24 hours a day. Signs are posted to help direct pedestrians through the construction zone.

I-5, Maytown to Lacey
