Why is WSDOT
build the Iron Goat Interpretive Site?
WSDOT, King County, Volunteers for Outdoor Washington and the United States Forest Service partnered to design, construct and maintain the site. It is located on US 2 at Milepost 58.3, at the intersection of Old Cascade Highway (a county road). This site is located on WSDOT right of way, King county right of way, and US Forest Service land, six miles west of the Stevens Pass Summit.
As the primary property owner, WSDOT acted as lead agency to construct a multi-use facility that includes an interpretive site, parking, traveler information, recreational access, and rest room facilities.
The End Result
The site built a third access point to the lower grade of the Iron Goat Trail from the project site to the Martin Creek Trailhead. It also provides safety rest area amenities including a new parking lot off the highway and new public restrooms.
The Iron Goat Trail is located on sections of an abandoned Great Northern Railroad right of way and is divided into two levels, an upper grade and lower grade. Currently there are two trailheads along this eight-mile section, one at Martin Creek and the other at Wellington. This project built:
A third access to the Iron Goat Trail.
An interpretive kiosk and a historic caboose.
Day and overnight passenger vehicle as well as bus parking.
