US 97 - North of Brewster - Passing Lane

 This project constructs a 1-3/4 mile long Northbound passing lane from MP 269.32 to MP 271.10 on US 97 about 7 miles north of Brewster in Southern Okanogan County.

Status

Spring 2013

This project was advertised for private contractor bids in February.  On Mar. 7, 5 qualified were opened. On Mar. 13, Contract # 8424 was awarded to Granite Construction Co. for $979,499.91, 12% under the engineering estimate. 
Construction should begin later this summer and take about 2 months (35 working days) to complete.

An email list, US 97 Chelan to B.C. Border, has been set up so those who wish can subscribe and get updates sent directly to them on this project and other activity in the section of US 97.

This I-3, Economic Initiatives -Trunk Systems - Capital Improvement Program project is intended to improve freight mobility on this major arterial in and out of British Columbia's Okanagon Valley. This section of US 97 is also a Scenic Byway designated "Via 97", supporting tourism industry development.

Why is WSDOT building this northbound passing lane?

This project improves mobility by providing a dedicated passing lane and also reduces the potential for crossover collisions.

The End Result
This project constructs a 1.78 mile passing lane seven miles north of Brewster, expanding the highway to three twelve foot wide lanes with a minimum of four foot shoulders.
