Overview
Construction began Aug. 11 and was complete Dec. 5, 2008 within the allotted 45 working days.
This Safety Improvement Program project built new sidewalks, limiting roadside access and provides illumination at the crosswalks.
This area was identified as a high pedestrian risk location due to the fruit packing facilities on the west side of the highway with the employee parking on the east side.

by defining access and increasing visibility with new ADA compliant sidewalk along US 97 from Main Street to SR 173, including illuminated crosswalks at 7th Street and other locations along US 97 in Brewster.

Partnerships & Cooperation
This project was advanced a year and combined with City of Brewster street and sidewalk improvement projects to save money.
WSDOT hired J-U-B Engineers Inc. of Kennewick to design and manage construction of this project. J-U-B and WSDOT hosted a public open house in February of 2008 at the Columbia Cove Community Center where public comments were gathered which were then incorporated into the final design.
Funding
This project was advertised for private contractor bids on May 27th, 2008. Five qualified bids were opened on June 19th. On June 23rd contract #7574 was awarded to Hurst Construction LLC for $807,347.30.
