Overview
This Roadway Preservation and Safety Restoration project paved 7.9 miles of US 2 on the west side of Stevens Pass in King County. The pavement between the Deception Creek bridge and the Stevens Pass ski area, was badly deteriorated due to severe winter weather and had to be rehabilitated, despite having been last resurfaced in 1999 - just eight years ago.
Construction began June 18th and was complete September 26th, 2007.
 | Improves Safety
Repaving provides a smoother ride and safer driving enviroment for travelers on the west side of Stevens Pass. It included new, brighter highway signs, improved warning signs, more visible striping, new reflective recessed pavement markers, and new guardrail and anchors.

 | Economic Incentive
Repaving keeps the entire roadway from deteriorating further, avoiding a complete roadway rebuild that typically costs four times the price of timely repaving.

Partnerships & Cooperation
King County, the Stevens Pass Ski Area, US Forest Service and Colville Tribal representatives were consulted as this project was designed.
Funding
This project was advertised for private contractor bids on March 5th. Bids were opened on April 19th. On April 23rd, contract #7311 was awarded to Wilder Construction Co. for $4,538,000.00. This was $1 million over the engineering estimate, but due to the critical need to get the road repaved as soon as possible, the contract was awarded.
This project is funded from the following sources:
- Pre-Existing Gas Tax - $5.4 million
- Total funding from all sources - $5.4 million
