About 800 cubic yards of riverbank was washed out below the roadway.

Overview
This emergency repair project replaced and armored a hundred feet of riverbank that washed out below US 2 in Tumwater Canyon a mile west of Leavenworth. We also repaired and re-anchored rock mesh above the roadway that was damaged by rock fall in January 2007. Work began at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 16th and was completed at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20th.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
Repairing the rock mesh above the roadway protects travelers from falling rocks.
Dollar Sign Glyph Economic Incentive
Repairing the riverbank below the roadway preserved the existing roadway before spring high water runoff could erode the riverbank further. The riverbank armoring placed boulders that can withstand a 100 year runoff event.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Project staff made presentations to the Cashmere City Council and the Leavenworth  City Council and have made personal contacts with other public officials and agencies, emergency services as well as private businesses directly affected. We used WSDOT web sites, highway advisory radios, electronic message signs, 5-1-1 as well as commercial radio and newspapers announcements to notify the public of this work and the highway closure and detour.

Funding
This project was funded through the following sources:

  • Pre-Existing Gas Tax - $80,000
  • Total funding from all sources - $80,000
