Status

Fall 2009

This project is scheduled to be advertised for private contractor bids on November 16, 2009 with construction to follow in the spring of 2010.

This safety project will provide a separated pedestrian crossing to eliminate conflicts with motorists.  It also will install access control barrier to prevent pedestrians from walking across the roadway and a right turn lane into the ski facilities western parking lot.

Why is WSDOT building a pedestrian crossing, controlling access and installing a right turn lane?
Many skiers must walk across US 2 to access the Stevens Pass Ski Area from its primary parking lot.  Hikers must cross the highway to travel the Pacific Crest Trail.  The at-grade crossing poses a hazard to pedestrians and motorists.  The right turn lane will allow skiers to safely slow and enter the parking lot, reducing the conflict with eastbound US 2 traffic.

The End Result
The crossing will separate the pedestrians from the motorists creating a safer environment for skiers, forest users and motorists.  The right turn lane will reduce the likelyhood of vehicular accidents in the eastbound vicinity of the ski resort.

Project Benefits

  • Increased safety for pedestrians
  • Increased safety for motorists
  • Improved pedestrian recreation access
