Overview
We repaved about five miles of US 2 between Monroe and Sultan. We also installed centerline and shoulder rumble strips, and new pavement markings.
This section of pavement of US 2 showed signs of deterioration and cracking from years of use. Vehicles and harsh weather conditions have caused wear and tear on the roadway. Repaving will end costly temporary repairs and ensure that the highway will last well into the future. Drivers are enjoying a smoother and safer ride now that the work is complete.
This section of US 2 was originally scheduled to be repaved in 2013. In 2007 we recommended accelerating the schedule because the pavement was showing signs of deterioration and structural deficiency. However, due to projected revenue shortfalls, the project was not included in the Governor’s final budget proposal.
Recent harsh weather conditions have caused further pavement deterioration and the roadway now requires extensive and costly repair. The funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will allow us to repave the highway now, ending costly temporary repairs and providing drivers with a smoother and safer ride.

Partnerships & Cooperation
February 2009 - We began designing this project. April 13, 2009 - We advertised the project for competitive bidding. May 7, 2009 - We awarded the project to Lakeside Industries, Inc. June 1, 2009 - We began construction. September 2009 - We completed all major work on the project. Drivers can expect some overnight closures for minor work through the end of the year.
